The word is…

STUDENT FEEDBACK
“I thought the program you guys put on today waz great!!! The way u guys look at things is awesome. I learned alot of kool things that i will 4 sure take to my school”

“I think that everything we did today was really useful and will help our school out a lot.”

“It actually helps a lot to know solutions to ours problems. We can’t hear the same solution over and over again. I kinda wish I could hear everything that was said but my group was pretty talkative… Lol”

STUDENT FACILITATOR FEEDBACK

“Personally, I am very delighted to join the Youth Talk; it has been an amazing experience to me. Also, I was pleasured to be a facilitator. This talk gave me a chance to communicate with other students from different schools and atmospheres. Not only that, but also gave the opportunity to know how other bright young adults think, and their very creative, effective ideas to solve problems. Last, I got to know about the very similar and different problems faced by students at different schools. As a result, I believe that the Youth Talk as an outstanding program as it enables students to express themselves greatly.”

TEACHER FEEDBACK
“The conference went well yesterday. Since it was student-focused, the teachers worked away from the kids. The children set the agenda and made action plans. Our students want to do a couple of things. First, they are very concerned that the Parkdale C.I. pool is closed and they would like to find a way to either make their voices heard about this issue. They are also looking into applying for a Speak Up grant. The person who told us about it says it’s easy to fill out the form for it and since barely anyone is applying for it, chances are we could get the $1500. They were talking about using the money to pay for swimming lessons for classes if we could find a facility that can accommodate us into their schedule. The application is due on November 23. The group seemed to enjoy it. They look forward to reporting back on their progress when the group meets again in March.”

“I think the purpose of today’s workshop (run by students, for students) was to give the kids a voice and provide them with the tools that they need to make changes at the school. They are working on agreeing upon an issue of importance at our school, and over the coming months will put a plan into action to effect change. The issues that are of importance to the kids so far relate to recess/lunch/dismissal, the pool, and bathrooms (I think). So we may see some movement in that area at Carleton Village. Chris Bolton has encouraged us to contact him if we have any questions or concerns following the sessions. There is also a website: youthtalk.ca. We will continue to work with the group and other students as they embark on this experience.”

“The forum is going quite well. The students are engaged and they are being asked questions as to how they can better their school in terms of facility and health and well being. The student’s seem engaged and are enjoying themselves…especially after a pizza lunch!”

PARENT FEEDBACK
“Just a quick note to thank you all, first for thinking of my child, second for seeing her leadership potential and finally for a great experience. She was so excited to go and still energized when she got home at the end of the day. Again, thank you.”

About

Pushing beyond student engagement and into student empowerment, YouthTalk! provides students with a unique opportunity to formally advise decision makers. Through open discussions, students share their opinions on issues important to them and brainstorm ideas as to what they feel could be done to raise the bar in the area of student engagement and close the gap in the area of student achievement.
